Sunday in Ordinary Time
IN
FAITH WE ARE CALLED TO TRUE INNER CONVERSION
Many, if not all of us, have experienced
the deep joy of coming home to our native
place. Jesus valued all human experience
and a visit to his roots must have been
very special. They noted his wisdom at the
local synagogue, were aware of his miracles,
knew his family, called him Son of Mary
and it all evoked astonishment in them.
Yet the Gospel tells us they could not accept
him. They despised him. How foolish we are
when we think we know all about a person
by judging him/her from a few external details.
They had let slip by a glorious encounter
with Jesus. Jesus who was truth itself,
didn’t believe in pretending. He verbalised
for them exactly what was happening. Strange
it is that Jesus needed their trust. They
had the power to render him powerless. He
could work no miracles there, and he was
amazed at their lack of faith.
Again and again in the Gospel Jesus questions
those who came to him about the measure
of their Faith. Whatever you ask for in
prayer, with Faith you will receive it.
Faith the size of a mustard seed can move
mountains. With Faith all is possible. An
important teaching then, from all the readings
today, is that the gift of prophecy, of
miracles, is present in the Church. What
we are sadly missing is the fact that the
prophetic voices today are too often silenced.
What we desperately need is a new outpouring
of the Spirit.
I tend to imagine it as an unlocking of
the beauty that remains to hidden. John
of the Cross reminds us that ‘love
is never idle; it is a continuous movement’
(Living Flame 2:2). Our journey of faith
ought not to narrow our vision but to open
it up into broader landscapes. May the Spirit
then continue to hover over the Church,
to enter, press in, and once in, to burn
until the Spirit finds the deepest core
of the human person. It is at this depth
that real conversion will happen. Let us
make it our most fervent prayer. ‘Lord,
grant us a new Pentecost’.
