GOODBYE!
Today’s Gospel reminds us
of how fleeting life is and the fragile hold we have
on it. ‘Be prepared for the unexpected’
we are told. The same message applies this weekend
to us here at Holy Family as the three priests say
goodbye. I had an idea that I might be going having
spent seventeen years here and with the major reshuffle
taking place through the city parishes it made sense
that a new Parish Priest would take over the reins.
Fr. Chris’s move was less anticipated and Fr.
John has said that when I left he would be going into
full retirement as I was the one who invited him back
into ministry on his return from Canada. We wish him
many more years of good health and thank him for the
tremendous gifts of wisdom, humour and piety he brought
to the parish.
Fr. Chris too will be missed. I am
grateful to him for his kindness to my father (When
he came here four years ago my father asked one evening
‘Who’s that wee boy running about the
house’) and his easy companionship over the
years. We had many a hearty laugh with the staff in
the kitchen. His commitment to the sick and dying,
his attention to the needs of the grieving at wakes
and funerals and his involvement with local clubs
and organisations have been his key parts of his ministry.
You will miss also his teasing of the Man. Utd. fans
and his weekly soccer round-up. Should I buy him a
Man. Utd. shirt as a going away present?
I am sure I can speak for all the
priests here when I say we will miss you the wonderful
people of this warm welcoming parish, your music and
willingness to sing, your generosity and support especially
over the recent difficult years of us priests. We
ask forgiveness of those we may have hurt or offended.
It was never our intention. We hand you over to the
caring and capable hands of Fr. McKenna and Fr. Page
whom we congratulate on their new appointments. May
God continue to bless this great parish and you its
people whom it have been our privilege to serve and
with whom we have gladly walked a part of our faith
journey together. AMEN.
