EUCHARIST:
God’s Gift, Our Response, and the
call to BE the Body of Christ
As we receive Holy Communion the Priest
or Eucharistic Minister says ‘Body
of Christ’ and we say ‘Amen’
When I say ‘Amen’ I am saying
Yes, I am receiving the Body of Christ and
I AM His body here and now - going out to
live as a member of Christ’s Body
here on earth.
In 2012, the Eucharistic Congress in Dublin
will attempt to help us all to appreciate
more fully what it means to be a Eucharistic
people in the context of our place and time.
-That is, how do we become better able to
BE the Body of Christ here and now.
The days of the great Corpus Christi processions
with festooned streets and decorated shop
windows, are now no more than a memory.
Some will say with a little justification,
that the procession smacked of triumphalism
and even arrogance. But on the positive
side, the procession will be remembered
for the way it moved our religion out of
the Church into the town and onto the streets.
Christ walked among his people, among their
homes, among their workplaces; he came into
the arena of our daily life. And we gave
expression to our identity as the people
of God walking together along the path of
life and accompanied by Christ who nourishes
us with the life he gives us in the Eucharist.
Our celebration of Corpus Christi today,
here, inside this Church is a call to us
to reflect on how we carry Christ out of
here onto the streets and roads of our parish,
back to our homes and our workplaces, into
the arena of our daily lives.
It reminds us that our religion is not
meant to be confined within the walls of
this Church but that it’s something
we carry with us, not in any arrogant or
triumphant way but with the humble conviction
of our faith in Christ. It reminds us that
Christ walks with us on our life journey,
and that he nourishes us for that journey
here at this altar. The food we receive
in here is the spiritual food that sustains
us out there. The feast reminds us of who
we are, it gives expression to our identity.
So as we leave from here today and go
out onto the street we become a Eucharistic
procession and each of us is a monstrance
carrying in our heart the life of Christ
that we have received here. And we carry
that life within us, with its message of
love and with us and in us it spreads to
all aspects of our society and becomes bread
for the life of the world.

PRAYER FOR THOSE DOING EXAMS Now
at this time of exams our parish community
in conjunction with the Pope John Paul II
Award Group extend an open welcome to anyone
who would like to take part in a time of

Lord, help me to
concentrate on the work I am about to do.
Keep me from wasting time with idle thoughts
and open my mind to the thoughts of others
no matter how different they are from my
own. Give me the grace to examine carefully
the accept truthfully, and to express myself
clearly for the praise and glory of your
name.
Amen
