MISSION SUNDAY

Next Sunday is Mission Sunday. The theme this year is ‘Reflect God’s Love’
Mission means sharing the Gospel with others, inviting them to freely opt for faith and abundant life.
In the last fifty years the Church in Ireland responded generously with many priests, brothers, sisters and laity going out to the ends of the earth, some willing to give their very lives in spreading the Christian message.

Despite pressing local needs, the Young Churches are now providing many missionaries.

Like Moses interceding for his people, we can intercede for missionaries by raising our hands in prayer.

Look at the Crucifix. See the great love that God has for each of us. I need to reflect God’s love in my own life remembering that ‘Christ has no body now but yours; no hands, no feet on earth but yours’ St. Teresa
Some give to the missions by going; some go to the missions by giving.
I am part of the mission of Christ wherever I am when I reflect God’s love through a kind word, a visit to an old person, the giving of a cup of water, a welcome to a stranger.

I can help the missionaries reflect God’s love to the people they value by offering my own suffering.

Missionaries, especially those from the Young Churches need financial support. Every cent collected in Ireland on Mission Sunday is sent to a missionary Church, not yet self sufficient. This gift enables the formation of native priests, sisters, brothers and lay catechists. Some of these will be missionaries themselves.

The Mission Sunday gift is also used for pastoral centres and the formation of lay leaders; the building of simple mission churches and health clinics for children; emergency aid in times of natural disasters or civil war; assisting missionaries serving refugees; and for pastoral and educational support.

Be a missionary. Reflect God’s love and help others reflect God’s love.

Pope Benedict reminds us that the absence of God in the lives of millions is the greatest suffering. People are hungry for God, not just for bread and freedom. Please help missionaries to reflect God’s love with the support of your prayer, offering of suffering and a generous financial contribution.

Incidentally, Fr. Sean will be going to Uganda next week as part of an annual trip to see ways in which people’s contributions help the missionaries and the people in missionary countries.

A pure and generous live is the best witness to the God in whom we believe and by whom we are drawn to love.

Know and love Jesus, so that you can become capable of true love and be a foundation of living water in the midst of a thirsting world.

Pope Benedict XV1
