Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading Proverbs 31: 10-13. 19-20. 30-31
In the book of Proverbs the writer speaks of the perfect wife, but this could also be applied to the perfect husband, the perfect parents, the perfect children, the perfect employee or the perfect employer. What the writer is saying is: be the best at what ever it is you are called to do or called to be.

Second Reading 1 Thessalonians 5: 1-6
Preparation is very important. Preparing for Christmas, for birthdays and even sacramental preparation is very important but St Paul is reminding us to be careful that we don’t get caught up in the ‘importance’ of the preparation and miss out on the ‘importance’ of the event.

Gospel Matthew 25: 14-30
The gifts we receive from God should be used wisely and generously.

33rd Sunday of the Year - 16th November, 2008.

Trust in Christ

Jesus said to his disciples: "You have been faithful in small things, I will trust you with greater." Fidelity in every area of life is one of the most important elements for happiness in human life. It is only when we know that we can fully trust others that we are at peace. This is the virtue that Jesus holds up for our prayer and concern this week. It is especially important in the relationship of husband and wife and it is there that we can all learn what it means. Fidelity in marriage means more than simply staying together. It also means working at making life together wonderful and enjoyable. This is also true for the relationships within family life. Being faithful to one another means being willing to accept the differences and to love each one as she/he is. And in the parish we show our fidelity by taking an active part in its life.

Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R

ANNUAL NOVENA TO OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP will begin on Monday 17th November and will continue until Monday 22nd December. The Novena will include all the usual elements, i.e. The Novena Prayer, Petitions, expressing our needs and intentions, Eucharistic Adoration, and the Blessing of the Blessed Sacrament with prayer of Healing. Each Monday night Fr. Sean and Fr. Kieran will reflect on different aspects of our faith as expressed in the Creed and experienced and lived out in our lives. Together we will encounter the mystery of our life, given by God’s creative gift, His presence through the Eucharist, the sending of His Holy Spirit, Mary’s special part in God’s plan, our call to build up His Kingdom and His offer and promise of forgiveness for our sins.

Tomorrow (Monday 17th) Theme: The Mystery of Life

Please bring your own Petition or pick up a petition card at the main door of the church and place it in the special petition box at Our Lady’s Altar.

As it takes time for the priest to prepare the petitions please hand them in before 7.20pm. Those petitions not in will be read out the following week. Please tick if you do not want them read out.

We hope that many will take part in our Novena again this year.

NOVENA PRAYER

Mother of Perpetual Help with the greatest confidence we come before your holy picture to be inspired by the example of your life. We think of you at that moment when full of faith and trust you accepted God’s call to be the Mother of His Son. Help us your children to accept with joy our own calling in life. When you learned that your cousin Elizabeth was in need you immediately went to serve her and offer your help. Help us, like you, to be concerned for others.

We think of you Mother at the foot of the Cross. Your heart must have bled to see your Son in agony; but your joy was great when He rose from the dead, victorious over the powers of evil. Mother of Sorrows help us to realise that we must expect trials and disappointments; help us not to loose heart. May we share with you and your Son the joy of having courageously faced up to all the challenges of life. Amen.
