SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT TRANSFIGURATION
If it is true that the Transfiguration speaks
to us about the divine nature of Jesus and that one
day we will participate in Jesus’ glorious life,
it is important to stress that because of our baptism
and because Christ lives in us, we are called to be
transfigured already in the present life, so as to
reflect something of God’s glory to the world.
We are called to look at all persons and all things
as really reflecting something of God’s glory.
By the power of the Spirit, our lives are woven together
by so many transfigurations. What prevents us from
seeing God’s glory in all its brightness is
the obscurity of our humanity, the shadow of our sins,
and the cloud of our weakness. St. Paul tells us that
we are ‘the image and reflection of God’
(1 Corinthians 11:7) and so as we journey in faith,
we should learn to discern God’s glory in the
humility of our flesh, in the simplicity of our daily
tasks and duties.
The Irish writer John McGahern once asked ‘Could
not the small acts of love performed with care, each
normal, mysterious day, be a continual celebration?’
The question is still relevant for us today. Why
do we not allow God’s presence within us to
transfigure all our activities into a celebration
of love? Why is it that the eyes of our minds and
hearts are so closed and blind to God’s loving
presence within and around us?
As we journey through this Lenten Season, the challenge
for us is not to look for new things but to look at
old things in a new way. The point is not to meet
the new people, but to welcome anew those with whom
we live.
May the Lord enlighten the eyes of our hearts because
‘by virtue of the creation and, still more,
of the incarnation, nothing here below is profane
for those who know how to see’.
