Mission Sunday

First Reading Isaiah 53;10-11

By his sufferings shall my servant justify many, taking faults on himself.

Second Reading Acts 13:46-49
I have made you a light for the nations.

Gospel Mark 10:42-45
Anyone who wants to become great among you must be your servant.

MISSION MONTH - Theme: ‘Reach Out’

Today we are called upon to play our role in assisting the missionary activity of the Church. We are given the opportunity to share in the experience of our brothers and sisters who carry on the missionary task today as they Reach Out, often in difficult and dangerous circumstances.

Featured on the Mission Sunday poster displayed in the porches of our Church are five Irish missionaries who have devoted their lives to mission and working for the good of others.

(Top Right) Sr. Fidelma Mahon from County Dublin, began her mission in Kenya in 1961 where she spent many years teaching. Since then she has served in many locations the most recent of which is Zimbabwe where she has been since 2004. Sr. Fidelma has committed a lot of her time to assisting the disadvantaged families of Mutare, in particular her efforts are concentrated on getting women in to income generating activities allowing them to become independent and take care of their families. Sr. Fidelma is featured in this photo holding young triplet sisters who have been helped by the F.M.S.A congregation in the Diocese of Mutare. The triplets were born to disabled parents who already had twins, a boy and a girl, and were in great need of food, shelter, clothing and baby milk.

(Top Left) Kiltegan Father, Des Millar, originates from Dublin and was ordained in 1969. Fr Des has devoted the last forty years to mission, spending his time in Turkana Desert, Lodwar Diocese in Kenya. Fr Des ministers from St. Lawrence’s Catholic Church, Nakwamoru, and is involved in pastoral work, education, aid work and health. Fr Des is featured in this photo alongside Paulina Naseku at St. Teresa’s Health Centre in Nakwamou. The centre was opened in 1973 by the Catholic Diocese of Lodwar and the Medical Missionaries of Mary. In spite of Paulina’s beautiful smile in this photo, she was actually in a lot of pain, and sadly, has since passed away. Paulina’s mother, Maria, is now looking after the children she left behind.

These are examples of the many people who are doing such important work in God’s name and on our behalf all over the world

Our spiritual and material offerings are crucial for the continued work of missionaries throughout the world. The total raised in today’s collection will be sent in its entirety to support mission projects worldwide.

Please give what you can, every gift - no matter how small makes a difference.

A LIGHT FOR MISSIONARIES

Just as the light of this candle burns brightly, may your love shine forever in the hearts of missionaries.

I ask you Lord to grant them wisdom and courage and guide them as they bear witness to you. Protect them through difficult times and keep them always in the palm of your hand.

(This is the prayer on the mission candle)
