MISSION SUNDAY - ‘GO AND TELL’

‘The Story behind this year’s Mission Poster’

Across Africa, South America, Oceania and Asia, missionaries are serving communities in various ways looking after body and soul. Some have founded groups which seek to help the suffering and distressed members of their communities. The following is an account of how the Love and Hope Foundation touched the life of Alice Achieng, a 52 year old lady living in the slums of Hilton, Naturu Town, Kenya.

Alice is featured alongside Missionary Sr. Patricia Speight (FMSA) a native of County Antrim, in this year’s Mission Sunday 2008 Poster. Sr. Patricia, a qualified nurse, has been a missionary in Kenya for over ten years. Alice is just one of 500 patients tended to by Sr. Patricia and the Love and Hope team.

Missionary Sr. Patricia Speight came across Alice Achieng on one of her many home visits to the suffering victims infected with HIV, in conjunction with the Love and Hope Foundation. Alice was found lying on the floor of her one roomed home. Angry and distressed, Alice did not welcome her visitor and hastily asked Sr. Patricia to leave. However, within a week, word came to the Love and Hope Centre that Alice requested her visitor to return.

As Sr. Patricia sat with Alice, Alice admitted she may be suffering from HIV. She complained of chest pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, headaches and a weakness of her lower limbs and was immediately given the treatment she needed to relieve these symptoms. Both ladies then prayed together asking the Lord to heal the patient if it be his will, there followed a period of prayerful and practical support during which Alice was diagnosed as suffering from HIV and she had to undergo emergency surgery on two occasions. Upon finally returning to her one-roomed home, Alice’s spirits were warmed to find a new bed, mattress and blankets as a welcome home gift from the Love and Hope Foundation.

Today, Alice is supported by her daughter and all at the Love and Hope Foundation who also taught Alice’s daughter how to care for her mother.

Although Alice is HIV positive, she can be seen walking around in the slums in Nakuru sharing the news of how the Love and Hope Foundation helped her to live and gave her a precious gift, that of faith.

Alice’s hospital treatment and surgery was supported by the generous people of Ireland. This story is repeated each day in different ways in different countries in the work of Irish missionaries.
