Last Sunday in Ordinary Time.

Our Lord Jesus Christ, Universal King .

Our Lord Jesus Christ, Universal King

First Reading Daniel 7: 13-14
The prophet Daniel foresees the coming of one who will have dominion over all peoples. Christians see this as a reference to Christ, the Universal King.

Second Reading Apocalypse 1: 5-8
Christ will take full possession of his Kingdom only at the end of time.

Gospel John 18: 33-37
Jesus declares before Pilate that he is indeed a King,
but that his Kingdom is not like the kingdoms of this world.

OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST UNIVERSAL KING

‘Neither a borrower not a lender be’ Good advice but one that wasn’t followed by Christ. Today we celebrate His Kingship at a time when monarchy is so rare. A king who began his reign lying on the wood of a manger and ended it nailed to a cross, stripped of a soldiers purple cloak. None of them his own. Our King of Friday.

He was always borrowing things. He borrowed Peter’s boat to preach from. He borrowed a donkey to ride on when he came to Jerusalem. He borrows bread and wine to make his body move and His blood flow throughout the centuries. He borrowed wood, thorns and nails to redeem the universe. Even in death He borrowed a tomb.

He hasn’t finished yet. He will borrow you. You will be His tongue and His throat parched. You will be his hands and His feet nailed. You will be His head thorned. You will be His side lanced. You will be His body stripped. You will be His corpse, buried. He will go on borrowing things until the end of time, until He has borrowed them all and made them holy. When the borrowing is over, we will be His sisters and brothers risen and unspeakably happy.

A man should not leave this earth with unfinished business.

He should live each day as if it was a pre-flight check.

He should ask each morning,

am I prepared to lift-off?
