DIOCESAN MASS FOR DECEASED
YOUNG PEOPLE
During the month of November we
remember and pray for all those have died and we pray
for consolation for all who mourn and grieve for those
have gone before us in faith.
This Sunday 25th November we welcome Bishop Hegarty
to our parish here in Holy Family where the bishop
will celebrate a Mass for all young people who have
died throughout the diocese.
As part of ministry to young people in our diocese
this Mass will be offered as an occasion for all of
us to remember with gratitude the lives and the talents
and gifts of our young people who have died, to express
our love for them and to ask God to welcome them into
his presence as we continue to accompany them with
our prayers. In doing this we hope that we will find
comfort, reassurance and peace in the great anguish
of loss and bereavement.
As we reflect on the death of those we love we find
each year in our parishes that the number of people
who die includes people of all ages from those who
died even before birth through every decade and phase
of the human journey right up to those who die at
a very advanced age in terms of the number of years.
Each person who dies is surrounded by a circle of
people who grieve and mourn and their pain and anguish
are expressed in many ways. The story of each life
and death is unique and special. There is always great
support and encouragement and in a particular way
the death of a young person is always a time of great
outpouring of love and support, compassion and sympathy
for those directly affected by the loss.
Among young people themselves there is a deep sense
of the need to help each other even when this is accompanied
by a feeling of helplessness in the midst of shock.
Often the response finds expression in a numbed silence
and a deeply respectful awareness of the presence
of the other person.
These and many other emotions need to be experienced,
acknowledged and celebrated. In the Mass this Sunday
as at every Mass we encounter the risen Lord who died
to save us and who cried out to his Father on the
cross, ‘My God, My God why have you forsaken
me?’ Jesus rose from the dead and offers us
the path to eternal glory through living in imitation
of his example because He is our way, our truth, and
our life. He is the source of all our love and compassion
and sympathy. Let us come to listen in prayer, silent
and spoken, in tears of grief and in thanksgiving.
As we draw upon the hope that He offers, let us ask
Him to comfort every day those whose hearts are broken
and in pain
Eternal rest grant to all who have died and let
perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in
peace. Amen.
