Sunday
29th July - Vol. 24 No 29
LOVE CHANGES EVERYTHING
A young girl in a rural town in Donegal worked at
the checkout of the local supermarket. Mary (not her
real names) did not take pride in her appearance and
rarely met the eyes of the customers. Then something
happened. People noticed that she was smiling and
was using make up. The question went around the town
‘What has happened to Mary?’! It was not
long before they had the answer - ‘She has a
new fella’
Last Tuesday a young man came to the parochial house
looking for accommodation as he was homeless. He looked
distraught. He was given tea and sandwiches while
we phoned the local hostels but all were full. (He
was from Scotland, had come over to stay with his
girlfriend but she kicked him out!).
A Youth 2000 meeting was about to start and some
members gave him a pair of Rosary beads and told him
of God’s love. A ferry ticket was bought and
he was given about £50 cash for petrol and a
bite to eat.
Next day we checked to see if the ticket had been
used. It hadn’t! Later we discovered he had
stolen the car in Buncrana and the Gardai were looking
for him!
At first I felt angry at being made a fool of but
later that day I thought of Jean Valjean the thief
and Myriel the bishop in ‘Les Miserables’
The bishop showed welcome, mercy and kindness to the
thief and it changed his life. Stephen was shown love
as we welcomed him here last week and tried to help
him. We believed him and respected him. Only love
can turn people around. Hopefully something touched
him.
As that other great musical says ‘Love
changes everything’.
