GRIEF
On Tuesday night at 7.15 we have our Annual
Celebration of Mass for the Dead especially
for those who died since this time last
year. Representatives of each bereaved family
will carry up candles in honour of their
loved ones in the Offertory Procession.
This special ceremony is being co-ordinated
by our Parish Bereavement Group.
Sooner
or later all of us are faced with the loss
of a loved one. Grief follows such a loss
as naturally as night follows day. It is
one of the strongest emotions.
Some people are embarrassed about expressing
their grief. They feel they must ‘put
on a brave face’ and therefore suppress
their feelings. It is now accepted that
to suppress grief is unwise and possibly
harmful.
The way to deal with grief is not to run
away from it, or pretend it isn’t
there but to face it and work through it
with as much honesty and love as you can.
The wisdom of the centuries is that suffering
must be borne. If we try to be strong, and
seek to put up defences to keep it out,
we may end up emotionally damaged as persons.
To
live fruitfully after the death of a loved
one, we need to go through a period of mourning.
If we go through it fully, we will emerge
enriched as persons. There are truths which
only sorrow can teach.
‘Blessed
are those who mourn, they shall be comforted’
